Energy drinks and kids: what parents need to know

Red Bull. Monster. Full Throttle. Hype. Wired. Spike Shooter. The brand names of popular energy drinks clearly suggest the youth market (12-35 years, according to industry figures) that has embraced them. But new warnings from Health Canada and the Canadian Medical Association may have parents confused about what specific dangers these caffeine and sugar-laden drinks pose for their kids.

What’s the story with energy drinks? Teens, athletes and young adults seek out these drinks to give them an energy boost for a variety of reasons: a big game, sleep deprivations, staying up all night to study or party. Celebrities have given them an important pop culture cachet and club-goers willingly pay highly inflated prices for the drinks.

On their own, energy drinks can be unhealthy for teens for  a variety of reasons. The amounts of caffeine, while variable from brand to brand, are always higher than what you’d find in a conventional can of cola.  A 12 oz. can of Coke or Pepsi has 34-38 mg of caffeine, while a cup of brewed coffee has between 80 and 100 mg of caffeine.  A 12 oz. can of Red Bull has 116 mg. Other brands contain between 120 mg (Monster), 258 mg (Wired X344) and a staggering 428 mg (Spike Shooter).

Since the drinks are served cold, they are often consumed much more quickly than a hot cup of coffee, and the shooter formats are downed in a single gulp, forcing the body to process these stimulants very quickly (along with sugar, amino acids and herbal stimulants like taurine, guarana and gingko). Since teens are less likely to realize the potent effects of the drinks, they may drink or 4 or 5 in a short time.

Not too surprisingly, that can prove very dangerous. Energy drinks have been linked to seizures, heart palpitations, strokes and even sudden death. We also know that most of these drinks are consumed in the evening and are thus likely to affect sleep quality. Since many teens already deal with chronic sleep deprivation, this is a real concern.

If they are risky on their own, then energy drinks can prove even more deadly when combined with alcohol. Sometimes called “hair of the dog,” the cocktail combinations are intended to stave off the depressant effects of alcohol with the stimulating properties of the caffeine and sugar.

One clinical research study found that the combination can make users feel less drunk (and thus more likely to over-consume) but had the same impairment of motor coordination and visual reaction time. Another study of university students found that those who regularly mixed energy drinks and alcohol got drunk twice as often as those who just stuck  to alcohol and were far more likely to be injured and require medical treatment while drinking.

Just as frightening, energy drink mixers more likely to be victims or perpetrators of aggressive sexual behaviours, even after researchers controlled for the amount of alcohol consumed.  Another researcher found that energy drinks were highly linked to risk-taking among teens, what she called “toxic jock behavior.” Kathleen E. Miller, Ph.D. found that:

Frequent energy drink consumers (six or more days a month), according to Miller’s findings,  were approximately three times as likely than less-frequent energy drink consumers or non-consumers to have smoked cigarettes, abused prescription drugs and been in a serious physical fight in the year prior to the survey.  They reported drinking alcohol, having alcohol-related problems and using marijuana about twice as often as non-consumers. They were also more likely to engage in other forms of risk-taking, including unsafe sex, not using a seatbelt, participating in an extreme sport and doing something dangerous on a dare.

Health Canada’s recommendations are for teens to consume no more than 2.5 mg per kilogram of body weight. Older and heavier adolescents can follow adult recommendations, which are for no more than 400 mg of caffeine a day. It’s own expert panel has recommended that energy drinks be removed from grocery and convenience store shelves and sold under the supervision of pharmacists.

However the newest restrictions by Health Canada ignore their own best advice. Instead, energy drinks sold in Canada cannot have more than 180 mg of caffeine in a single serve container, equivalent to about 5 355 ml cans of Pepsi. It’s also more than double the recommended amount of caffeine for kids 10-12 years old. These regulations also exclude the highly concentrated “energy shots” sold at convenience stores and gas stations.

No one is happy about these watered-down health measures. Child safety and medical experts believe they don’t go far enough to protect teens.

In the meantime, parents need to understand the risks these drinks pose to their kids. Discuss your concerns with your kids, and explain the medical reasons for limiting their consumption. It’s also important to explain why it’s not safe to consume them with alcohol. It’s very possible your teens have no idea that the drinks, which look completely harmless on the shelves next to regular colas, could be so dangerous.

Texting and driving a big problem with teens (and their parents)

Texting. Talking on the phone. Eating. Searching for a new song. We are so accustomed to our car culture that it’s easy to forget how dangerous driving really can be. A single moment’s distraction is all it takes to turn the family minivan into a deadly weapon.

And it’s only going to get worse. According to the Canadian Automobile Association, texting recently overtook impaired driving as the No. 1 safety concern among drivers. And since 95% of Canadians between 14 and 17 send or receive text messages (according to a poll quoted in the Globe & Mail), this is a problem that is only likely to grow.

An experiment conducted by students in three Canadian studies involved standing on busy intersections at rush hour and counting drivers simultaneously engaged in distracting activities. They counted a total of 802 distractions in one hour, with 199 taking place in Toronto, 314 in Montreal, and 289 in Moncton. Texting while driving ranked third in the total number of distractions (after eating/ drinking and talking to passengers).

The experiment was organized by Allstate Insurance, to draw attention to unsafe driving practices. “Driving while distracted is the equivalent of driving after drinking four beers, so even one distracted driver is one too many,” says spokesperson Saskia Matheson in a company press release. “All Canadian provinces now have distracted driving legislation in place, but it is not enough. Drivers need to be reminded of the dangers of taking their eyes off the road or hands off the wheel even for a few seconds,” adds Matheson.

But how much worse is texting than alcohol when you’re behind the wheel? According to this illuminating experiment by Car & Driver Magazine, it’s much, much worse. The texting drivers took an extra 90 to 319 feet to hit their brakes and stop their cars than the drivers impaired by alcohol (7 to 19 feet). Their reaction time to distractions was considerably slower.

The dangers of texting and driving have been reasonably well publicized. A 4-minute excerpt from a 30-minute film on the dangers of texting and driving produced by a South Wales police force became a YouTube sensation two years ago, with a particularly effective and jarring presentation of an accident and its aftermath (watch it here, but beware that it contains images that may be upsetting to younger viewers).

And yet, we see people doing it all the time. Parents do it with kids in the car. Kids who are watching their parents’ behaviour carefully, and will one day be behind the wheel of the car themselves.

The thing is, while drinking and driving have become socially unacceptable, we are only just coming to terms with the idea that it isn’t OK to have your cellphone in your hand. Even if you think you are a better driver than average. Even if you are just stopped at a light. Even if you’re in bumper to bumper traffic.

Part of the problem is that we have become so busy and so accustomed to multi-tasking, that the moments spent driving in our cars seem wasted if we are not also accomplishing some other task. But just because technology now allows us to catch up on our email or check Facebook at any time doesn’t mean we should. And yet over half of teenage drivers admit to texting, typing or reading behind the wheel.

If this isn’t a conversation you’ve had yet with your teens (whether they are driving age or not), it’s time to start talking.

And if you are one of the many, many adults who think you are somehow exempt from the laws of physics, it’s time to think again.

Is it ever OK to spy on your teens?

On Monday evening, I was invited to speak about digital safety to a group of parents of 8th graders at a local high school. It was a great group of people, energetic, informed and enthusiastic about keeping their kids safe. They had so many questions, we ended up staying some time after the session was supposed to end.

It was abundantly clear that thy were very concerned. And somewhat at a loss for how to implement some of my recommendations with their 13 and 14-year-olds.

I understand that. Ideally, we should begin introducing these rules when they log on to their first Club Penguin or Webkinz account in elementary school. I had a harsh lesson in setting up Internet safety rules early: my then 5-year-old typed “Elmo” into a YouTube search at a friend’s house three years ago, and saw some homemade video with a puppet murder scene that left her with nightmares for months.

It’s one thing if they grow up knowing that mom and/or dad need to give permission to set up accounts on websites, that parents need access to all passwords until it’s decided they are responsible and mature enough to earn their privacy, that they must never, ever clear the history from their Internet browsers. It’s all about leaving traces to prove where they’ve been and what they are doing.

But introducing this rule for the first time at 13? Yikes. I can only imagine the moaning and groaning. A number of parents in the room were clearly anticipating the battles that lay ahead of them when they went home to announce this new policy.

But there is no shortcut. It needs to be done.

I compared it to driving a car. We would never imagine handing the keys to our car to a 14-year-old. They are too young, too inexperienced, too immature to handle the responsibility. Possibly they are not even physiologically capable yet — their legs may be too short to reach the brake and gas pedals. They might hurt themselves or others, or cause damage. And yet we don’t always question the wisdom of allowing our kids to make use of the incredibly powerful, public communication tools that exist online, often without any adult supervision at all. There can still be damange; people can get very hurt.

This brings me to one particularly interesting question brought up at the meeting. One parent asked about spying software available to record keystrokes or copy the browser history, even if your devious teenager finds a way to erase it. Basically, he wanted to know if it’s OK to spy on your kids.

My answer? It depends.

Ideally, we don’t want to spy on them. But privacy is not a sacred right when you are 13 or 14 years old. It is a privilege that has to be earned by showing consistent responsibility. Possibly your 16 or 17-year-old has demonstrated they don’t need their Internet activity closely monitored anymore. But I’d be hard-pressed to find a single 12-year-old with the judgement skills to go it alone.

Instead of spying, start off by involving your kids in the supervision. Link their Facebook accounts to your email to start with, so that you get notifications of friend requests, pictures posted and messages. Instead of sitting around reading them, have your kid show you their home feed and profile every once in a while. Ask to look at their email in boxes. There are some fabulous conversations waiting to be had. This isn’t a lecture, it’s a discussion. Big difference. Ask them what they think of language being used, pictures being tagged. You’ll get some really interesting insights into their world.

You should check their browser histories from time to time, but you can do that with them too. I have no problem with a look at their histories without them, but that shouldn’t be the only way you do it.

Is it ever OK to spy? To log in using their passwords when they are not around? Absolutely. If you think your child is in trouble, if you are concerned about recent behaviour, possible depression, cyberbullying (whether they are victim or perpetrator), drugs, sexual health issues or violence. If your motivation is one of genuine concern for your minor child or someone they may be hurting, and your intrusion is as respectful as possible, then you should disregard the usual respect for privacy.

Has your child ever lied about their activity online? Have they set up a safe, dummy account for you to check, then surreptitiously set up another for them to engage freely with friends? That’s fraudulent. That’s a fast-track to having privileges revoked and strict rules put into place. That’s when you may need to do some poking around. Some benevolent monitoring.

What I’m saying is, that’s when you need to do some spying.

Moreover, this is a rule that should be established with them when they are young enough to listen, so if the day comes that you log in with their passwords to their account, they cannot say “How could you do this?”

Who am I kidding? They will definitely say that. Guaranteed. Probably quite loudly.  But now you have an iron-clad response: we may have to do this to keep them safe.
