Teens, Technology and Risk: Adapted Teaching Strategies in a Media-Saturated World

Teens, Technology and Risk: Adapted Teaching Strategies in a Media-Saturated World

Who is this for? High school teachers
How long? 90 min (presentation and Q&A) to half-day (presentation, Q&A and activities)

It’s been said that creativity is the flip side of caution, and history offers many examples of those whose fearlessness and daring led to advances in science, art, culture, politics and technology. However, as parents and educators, we are aware that our pre-teens and teens have not yet developed all of the judgment and responsibility they may need to navigate our complex, dynamic and media-saturated world. How much risk is too much, and how much is just enough? Where can we get information about the issues they – and we – will face in daily life? How do we keep abreast of the constantly changing developments in technology, social media and popular culture? What options are there to be part of ongoing discussions about these risks, to learn more and to contribute our own experiences?

At the end of this workshop, you will have a nuanced understanding of how teens are developmentally wired to deal with risk, learn to recognize warning signs in students who may be in trouble, and develop practical classroom strategies to more effectively reach the high school student in a wired world.
